ADHD
and Entrepreneurship
The following is an interview with Warren Simonoff,
ADD Business Coach.
1) Why would entrepreuneurship be a good
career choice for an individual
with ADD?
Generally speaking ADD/ADHD people are
right-brain dominant and are creative/artistic types. They are free
spirits who think out of the box and need room to grow. With proper
support, being an entrepreneur is one of the most fulfilling positions for an
ADDer to utilize their inherent strengths.
2) What ADD qualities would benefit an
entrepreneur?
First, yes, there are positive strengths
and gifts that ADDers are blessed with. An ADD entrepreneur would be
someone who is high energy, has mega-ideas and is a motivator who can infuse the
business and "team members" with that level of enthusiasm.
3) Would the burden of having to keep the
business organized (especially in the beginning stages) be overwhelming and
increase the risk of failure?
Assuming that an ADDer is addressing the
symptoms that he exhibits by ongoing appropriate modalities of treatment, I
would think that the risk of failure in the startup phase or otherwise would
fall within entrepreneurial statistical averages. Let's concentrate on
success and understand that retrospectively throughout history there have been
ADDers that have exhibited huge success: ie, Thomas Edison, Winston Churchill,
and even Robin Williams and many more as the list keeps growing.
4) What steps could an individual take in
order to help ensure success?
What has been proven to be the most
effective method of achieving life goals, which includes a business and personal
balance, is a multimodality approach to ADDers' symptoms. That would mean
medical treatment, and/or therapy, a regular exercise program and ADD Coaching.
Remoulding one's thinking to positive self-talk and understanding that one does
not have to be an expert in every business phase. Therefore, delegation is an
important piece of the ADD/ADHD puzzle. Human beings are all works in
progress, and life is a mystery at best. However,I have seen ADDers reach
meteoric heights if they believed in themselves and continued a tailored
treatment program that worked for them.
5) As a professional/business coach do
you see certain professions where
ADDers may be uniquely qualified?
Again, with proper treatment ADDers can
burst forth from a restrictive coccoon and share their gifts with the world.
ADDers are under a broad umbrella, each with unique biochemistry.
However, because of their "free spirit" and the general exuberant
nature of ADDers, many of whom can synthesize information and are idea people,
they are well suited to be attorneys, small business people, doctors, the
entertainment industry and any profession that offers variation, excitement and
is multifaceted.
6) How can a coach help someone to
succeed in business?
By working with an ADDer in a team
multimodal approach, including a doctor, coaching and an exercise regimen, this
has been proven to work most effectively in addressing the syndrome. This
support is the foundation of succeeding in life and business. Journeying
with clients and together exploring their strengths and also determining which
areas that they need assistance in also serves in acknowledging and enhancing
clients' innate abilities. During this process, there are coaching forms
and assessments to clearly recognize what an ADD client's ideal business day
would look like, then structuring that day and creating a schedule. If
there are organizational issues, addressing those and co-creating systems that
work for the ADDer.
A key component is the marketing piece. Again, by exploring the
personality traits of the client and implementing a formal assessment and/or
discussion, and then with the ADD client formulating a measurable active program
to building a practice or business.
