Teaching Children with ADD/ADHD to read

Teaching students with attention problems how to read can be especially challenging. The Sound It Out Land Reading Program helps teachers and parents engage and motivate children with attention
problems to learn difficult reading skills. This wonderful musical program features sing-along teaching songs, animated videos, and interactive games. Through these enjoyable activites, students learn a step-by-step complete course in phonics and early reading, including letter sounds, word decoding, and sentence reading.

Students with ADD/ADHD face a number of challenges when learning to read, including difficulties with attention, lack of motivation, and
problems with word decoding. Sound It Out Land uses attractive Videos and Software to overcome these hurdles and let the student rapidly
begin reading on his/her own.

We have found that the most effective way to put Sound It Out Land to work with a child with ADD is to start with the Phonics 1 VHS Video,
playing it several times each week or daily. Have the child sing and read with the program. Then introduce the self-paced CD-ROM software and
let him/her play on their own. The child will automatically move from letter sounds to reading words and then sentences. The matching flash
cards, books, and poster can reinforce the learning from the Videos and CD-ROM.

Here is an excerpt of a letter from Gabrielle Wyant: "My son, Adam, has P.D.D. (Pervasive Development Disorder) and Attention Deficit. Sound It
Out Land has been a big help. Getting him to sit still for longer than 5 minutes has always been a great problem but not so with this new program. We were so amazed at his improvement that we donated a copy to his Special Education class. They too have had wonderful results. So from my family and all the children and families at Murdoch Elementary School we would like to say THANK YOU!"

On the secret Level 7, students chose interesting topics and write about them using the five-step writing process. The program even reads back student's writing using text-to-speech for
