My question is, do you think children with ADD
would do better starting school later, or even home schooling so that they
don't have as much presure?

Guide For Alternative Approaches To ADD/ADHD
by
Kimberly Hill
Herbal
and alternative treatments for ADD/ADHD are becoming more and more popular.
Although herbal remedies have been around for thousands of years, we still do
not seem to have faith in their abilites and relatively little is known about
these types of treatment by the "general' public.
However,
many people feel uncomfortable placing their child on medication and are
reaching out to find alternative methods of treatment. After speaking
with many parents, the general consensus is that these treatment are pretty
much the same as stimulant medication in that different herbs react
differently in different children. While some may work well for some children,
they may have no effect on others.
According
to my informal research, it also seems that the severity of ADHD greatly
affects the ability of herbal remedies to work. For mild to moderate
cases, the herbal remedies seem to have some effect. Some parents use
herbal remedies as a way to supplement stimulant medication
or
cut down on the daily dose of ritalin. One father I spoke with reduced his
son's 90 mg a day dose to 20 mg by adding an herbal supplement.
As
with any medication, herbal remedies must be closely monitored for side
effects and drug interactions. Another child that I know is allergic to
grapes and therefore is unable to use OPC, which contains grape seed extract.
So please, remember, that although these are natural formulas, many can
contain additives or ingredients that can cause reactions and caution should
be taken when administering. My best advice would be to always check
with your physician first.
